Sohra Bridge – A Review
Watched this film on a lazy Saturday afternoon. Made me lazier ….very slow moving. Wish it had sub-titles – the movie maybe boasting of being trilingual but not every Bengali can understand Assamese! Half of the dialogues went off my head! Probaly important dialogues! They were singing a folk song – nothing understood! That left me pretty irritated. I like watching regional films – but iwth sub-titles obviously!
Film shows the lifestyle of North East Bengal area – esp. Assam. The poverty, the unemployment, how people waste time doing nothing…as there is nothing to do…or so it seems!
The film shows a young lady who works in some TV channel takes a long break and comes to Assam. She tells the cab driver to take her to a shady place where identity is not required…for she may want to enjoy life in a bold way…by hiring gigolos, consuming drugs etc – which she did not want many people to know!
She had come in search of her father’s memories. Her father was an author and was hired by local politicians or political sect so that he could paint them ‘GOOD’ in the eyes of the readers. Her father had refused to write lies and so he was killed!
The daughter was probably haunted by her father’s memories – so she just came to get a feel of how her father must have spent his last days away from them (mother and her).
She is shown going to a simple joint – which offered drugs btw! Then couple of young boys were singing and a gigolo saw a new client in her.
Well the gigolo was darn right! She hired him for sex! In Matriarchal societies, rich and aged females hire male sex-workers and in Patriarchal societies, rich and aged males hire female sex-workers – meaning – if you have money and are financially independent, you need not adhere to social morals etc. Just go ahead and buy sex, booze and drugs – the reason why people want to become rich – to enjoy life – wine, women (men), wealth! Wow!! what a great philosophy is this!
Anyway, sad to see the life of refugees – how they are having to run around just to find shelter and peaceful existance! Touts making money for settling refugees, young boys getting engaged in wasteful politics, drug peddling, gigolo-giri.
A very personal experience-
The film managed to shoot many moments of dawn* (early morning sky, trees, nature) – which gave me cool sensations on my crown chakra!! On and off in the film, my sahasrara (crown) chakra could experience the same magnetic pull which I feel when I sit for meditation! Well folks, this is the only thing worth remembering of the film!
*Dawn – It is said that early morning hours – around 4 am, the Paramchaitanya (divinity) is most active and it is the best time for spiritual aspirants to meditate.
