Paheli – Film Review
This mystery/ riddle is all about the mystery of a woman’s mind.
Initially in India (and even now in some villages) common men used to dominate over their female counterparts a lot! They were very insensitive and dry personalities. During those days , women were just a machine to produce babies, cook for the household, wash and keep the house clean – she had no say whatsoever in any financial or business areas – nor was any suggestion taken from them as ladies were considered dumb & dull ! Well, they were not allowed to attend any school etc. so how would they have any worldly knowledge anyways? Males kept them busy with cleaning, mopping, cooking etc….and if she was lucky, then respect her also for what she did morning till evening for the household.
Sometimes such ladies gave birth to poets and other literary personalities – who spent more time at home and observed the loneliness of their mothers – thereby becoming sad, melancholy etc. and expressed it in their poems, short stories, skits.
One such story from some remote Village of Rajasthan focuses on what a Lady actually expects from her husband.
Skits and dramas have always been the best way to educate people – its easily understood by one and all – at the same time !
This is what the movie Paheli is all about.
There is a dialogue that the Ghost Shah Rukh makes : I am the love hidden in the woman’s heart – trying to indicate to fellow men – how exactly a woman should be treated – quiet like Bryan Adam’s “Have you ever really loved a Woman “!
