PAA – The Review:

A lady loses her husband in her late 20s or early 30s leaving a two years old girl child to bring up – all on her own. In the movie she is referred to as ‘Bum’ aka. Buttocks. The fatherless girl child (Vidya Balan) grows up without a father figure – which also means – no one to teach her the sense of responsibility and discipline. Her mother – Bum – is pretty bold ….kind of very modern and bold – although how much ‘bold’ is not really shown in the film – whether she had affairs with other men etc. – not shown in the film. But since she was a single mother – probably she never had the time to teach moral values, ethics etc. to her daughter. Probably she was busy making both ends meet….anyway – lets proceed with the film.

So Bum’s daughter, Vidya, grows up and happens to meet a ‘hunk of a man’ ( Abhishek Bachhan) ‘by chance’ – ‘Ittefaq se’ (in hindi) and decides to copulate with him – anywhere and everywhere…and as luck would have it – in one of the ‘mingling’ sessions, she had become so ‘frenzied’ to ‘do the needful’ that she did not give him the chance to take out the condoms from his pocket…and that sealed her future! All this is shown in the song btw. (for people who are wondering how they missed such an exciting scene) – no gory details of ‘copulation process’ shown (unfortunately) – but enough indication is given that they ‘did IT’ – in the toilet of a running train, in the khets (fields), in a dingy small room..etc..etc.

So Vidya becomes pregnant – she is a second year medical student btw. – and she asks Abhi to marry her (so very Bhartiya Naari kinds – Indian Woman types). Now Abhi wanted to become a political leader – he wanted to change the political scenario of our great India….ho ho ho – goodness gracious me! – a male who does not believe in such a strong ‘social value’ – that is marriage – he wanted to change the social scenario of India! Hello! And turn India into what? – a place for the pimps and the prostitutes – having multiple sex partners and changing sex partners like clothes?! Turn it into the ‘early men’ days – where there were no social rules and norms and people used to live like beasts ?

Marriage was introduced by our ancestors to ignite the sense of responsibility and discipline among men – so that they participate in ‘upbringing the child’ along with the woman who bears their child…unlike what happens in Animal kingdom – where the male – be it lion, dog, wolf – just ‘copulate’ and leave – the female has to take care of the entire ‘upbringing’ process – starting from feeding, teaching to hunt, fighting for food etc. (you may watch few episodes of Animal Kingdom to see it in detail).

So this ambitious future ‘political leader’ dumps her. Vidya’s sense of self respect suddenly takes the front seat – initially her sense of self respect had taken a back seat – the reason why she went happily humping around a complete stranger she met ‘by chance’ near a ‘strange looking clock’…kind of showing ‘time eating man’! SO she tells him that she will never see him again in her life….and bids him goodbye.

Anyways – tie your safety belts for further shocks – Vidya’s Bum mom asks matter of fact-ly – ‘Do you want the child?’!!!!!! I mean daughter is in 2nd year, unmarried, the male who impregnated her refuses to take responsibility – and lo behold! – Bum mom suggests to her daughter that she can keep the child – miss your classes for couple of months – re-join after you deliver and we both will live happily ever after with the child! Deep sigh! – maybe Bum mum thought that she will be lonely if her daughter gets married to someone – so the best way to keep her forever was to suggest such a dumb thing!

Vidya delivers a child suffering from ‘Progeria’. She and Bum silently suffer the pains of upbringing an abnormal child. The child is Auro. Now Auro happens to meet his father ‘by chance’ – things happened in this family by chance….but Vidya tells Auro not to become a ‘hiccup’ to his father!! – ie. not to tell his identity to his father…that it was him whose seed contained the genetic map leading to ‘progeria’! Auro tries his best to keep the secret but its out and then abnormal Auro asks them to get married!

Inference:

1. Movie is trying to keep alive the institution called ‘Marriage’.
2. Movie speaks about the power of media and how it can be used for good things…but again the definition of ‘good’ and bad’ is unclear to DFs – so not of much use.
3. You go against society…nature goes against you. So try to be a good social element.

Amen.
