Hemanta Film Review – The Modern Tragedy Prince Hamlet & the equally modern ghost!

Hamlet is William Shakespeare’s longest play, and is ranked among the most powerful and influential tragedies in English literature….so only intellectual Tollywood is capable of  adapting the story and map it to modern lifestyle!

Hemanta’s father, who is actually a ghost, is not shown as some gory ashen  entity trying to convey his tragedy to his son and ask him to take revenge but he messages him via sms! Every time the ghost was around, there was voltage fluctuation and a missed call. The father’s Ghost (hereinafter FG) was following his son pretty closely – anytime he saw his son going off track…he used to give a missed call or caused voltage fluctuation so that his son single-mindedly plans to take revenge from his uncle and recently widowed mother – who was going to marry his uncle soon. His uncle always had a weakness for ex-actress – Hemanta’s mother (hereinafter HM).

HM was unhappy with her husband because he had impregnated her – and made her lose her figure – made her appear fat and bloated – when she was at her peak! Plus he was more of a loner who liked his solitude more – thereby not giving much time to his wife and son. Thus she gets attracted towards her husband’s brother who loved her and gave her lots of attention. So basically it is shown that Hemanta was not a very welcome child after all – his mother completely disliked his presence in her womb that destroyed her career as an actress by making her appear fat and bloated. It is a very tough competition out there – girls from the age of 16 or 17 are ready to sleep with just anyone to get a role in a film! She had somehow managed to reach the top – but all got ruined with her pregnancy by her irresponsible husband (she calls him irresponsible because he impregnated her soon after marriage).

His childhood friend, Jishu, is a gay whose gay partner is a hacker.  Jishu asks his friend to find out the number from where Hemanta was getting those eerie sms. Gay friend stumbles upon a big fraud company engaged in lots of monetary transactions that was supporting the terrorist groups to establish terror. That fraud company was owned by his uncle….who had murdered Hemanta’s father!

Also shown in the film was the story of a girl who had been in love with Hemanta. Just as soon as the girl and Hemanta were about make love in a sordid dingy hotel, his father intervenes by giving missed calls and putting the fuse off…so they stop ‘doing the needful’ and the girl leaves the hotel in a huff. The girl’s father was the informer of Hemanta’s mother – who in turn gets accidentally killed by Hemanta. Hemanta then also kills the two guards who were following him – basically he went on a killing spree – after all his FG had taken possession of his body and was killing everyone in vengeance!

Jishu’s gay friend in the meantime was becoming jealous of Hemanta – he thought his bed partner Jishu would soon dump him and be the partner of Hemanta! He takes an overdose of drugs and commits suicide! He behaved much like some unconfident woman who was always worried and suspicious of losing her man! Probably he played the female role in the gay partnership with Jishu.

Mother dies – taking an overdose of sleeping pills – out of guilt. When Hemanta was with her, his FG sent an sms in Bengali – so that it is convenient for his mother to understand the language. With his son, the FG conversed in English…since son had gone to the US and was well versed in English language.

Hemanta then offers to drive his uncle back home after his mother’s funeral – idea given by Jishu – and purposely bangs against some truck so that they both die instantaneously!

Conclusion

The ghost/spirit/soul realm seems  pretty powerful…do not play with it or take the spirit science lightly!

Better to stay away from occult and tantric practices as you may unknowingly invite some frustrated / depressed entity in your body…who will possess you and start doing his/her work – leaving you completly mad!

It is quite possible that the gay partner of Jishu got possessed by some female ghost since he had interest in occult practices plus he took drugs – that opens up your psyche to the collective subconscious…and the ghosts in limbo can jump into your bodies and make you work according to their own sweet will! Probably it was  the female ghost who was behaving in suspicious / jealous manner towards Jishu!
